As a person looking from the outside, I find it easy to point out the major flaws which Augustine makes while reading Confessions. "He started stealing pears, he slept with a woman that he does not love and he had a child with her, etc." I guess my human nature can be to blame for this to easily judge others, but Augustine's mother is not the case. Augustine's mother is always praying for Augustine to become better in his witness and faith every day. I applaud his mother for realizing how her son is like every other person-- he is very sinful. She even wishes for him to be baptized and start his life anew. I soon realized after this that Augustine's mother is a representation of how God is always with us.
God still stands next to us and guides us even though we are sinners. Also, God sees past our mistakes and forgets them once we repent. Augustine and his mother are almost complete opposites of each other-- the sinner in need of a Savior and the cleanliest, devout Christian. This is exactly how we are to God; we are like filthy rags compared to Him.
If Augustine never had his mother, then his life would be very depressing since he had no one else to depend on. Just like Monica was there for Augustine, so is God always present being in our lives. Hebrews 13:5 says, "... I will never leave you; never will I forsake you." We should be grateful of what a forgiving and just God we have. Just a confession...
I commented on Jamie and Madalyn's posts.
Hi Brooke! Firstly, I love your title. It is in our nature as humans to judge others, and we tend to magnify the bad before the good. That's why it is important to remember God has a purpose for everything and everyone. He is capable of saving even the worst of the sinners. You make a great point. I agree with your take on Monica, and she does not get enough credit for her unending faith in her savior to save her son. Great post!
ReplyDeleteCommenting because of the title. I love that song so, kudos to you. Back on topic though, I really appreciate the comparison between Monica and God. No matter how far we stray, we know God would welcome us with open arms, just as Monica did for Augustine.
