Well... I never thought I'd have to recall on my childhood within a church. Yes, there might've been times where we'd have nerf wars or sneak out during service to play hide-n-seek within the church, but there's one thing I never liked, church plays. While reading through the Liturgical Drama section for our reading, this was honestly the first time I have ever heard that term, so this was an interesting read for me. Around 5th grade we did this one play where trees led a young traveler to a man who preached the Good News. No I do not remember the name of it, but I do remember being one of the trees who had no lines and decided in the opening scene where "the trees woke up," I stayed asleep. I feel like that should tell you how much I hated doing these things. But it was all for a good reason. See, as young children, we would go to church because we were forced or because we loved to. Those are the only two reasons. While being that young elementary age, these productions weren't used to forced us kids to do something, but it also helped teach us certain Bible stories and lessons in a much simpler way for our pee-wee minds. As I grew up, I participated in Bible drill competitions and would help lead certain VBS events. I don't think as a kid I would've learned the way I did if it wasn't for these horrible plays. Looking back now, they still suck, but its a fantastic way to help educate kids with certain stories in a simple way without forcing them to read the Bible. It tends to be a "fun" way to learn for the kids without them being restless.
I commented on Leanne and Abigale's post.
I definitely agree with you man. These kinds of plays make more impacts than we would even be able to understand when we were younger. There are not may things I could be able to recall with great detail from elementary school years, but I can easily remember the plays that I have been in.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm the only weirdo who actually loved those plays, lol. Having to memorize the songs which I didn't realize at the time were based on Scripture definitely laid a solid foundation in my life either way.
