When I was reading the Iliad, I was waiting to get to the end to read about the Trojan Horse. When I finally got to the end, I was let down on how the story just ended in the middle of the action. I was very disappointed that there was no Trojan Horse. I was beginning to wonder where the story of Troy's fall was since it was not in the book about the Trojan War. I know I could have easily went to the Internet and look it up, but I didn't care enough to.
Since we moved into Roman literature for class, I thought we were done with anything that had to do with Greece. I did not really realize or understand completely how large of an influence Greece had on the world. So naturally I was shocked to find the Trojan War picking up where it left off in the Iliad in the Aeneid. I thought that this Roman book would be about Rome. This just goes to show how ignorant I am of ancient Greek and Roman texts.
Despite of my ignorance, I did know a little about the Trojan War. So when I got to Book II of the Aeneid, I was so happy to see the Trojan Horse. Finally, the ending I was wanting to see in the Iliad is here. I finally read how the Greeks tricked the Trojans into getting that horse into Troy, and it was not how I thought it was.
I commented on Hailey Morgan's and Clabo's post
Though the story of the Trojan Horse is mentioned in The Odyssey, it is not presented as fully as it is in The Aeneid. When Aeneas began to explain the story of the infamous wooden horse, I was so happy because I had never heard the story in its entirety before.
ReplyDeleteI touched on this a bit in my blog post, too, but Greek and Roman histories are so intricately connected! The two nations really were the annoying rivals of the ancient world, always trying to one up each other.
I thought the same thing too. I did not realize how much of the Trojan War would be in The Aneid. I always have a hard time of seeing the big picture and where things line up in history. I know bits and pieces but I never know the right order. Everything made so much more sense though because I knew the history behind the events, as well as what was coming(the building of Rome and the destruction of Carthage).
